How Can I Explore Entrepreneurship & Business in High School?

Not every high school offers elective courses or clubs that allow students to explore subject areas beyond the ‘standard’ high school curriculum, such as entrepreneurship and business.

Exploring Entrepreneurship and Business Outside of the Classroom

As a student, you don't have to wait for your high school to offer entrepreneurship and business courses to get started on your entrepreneurial or business education journey. With the rise of much higher quality online courses, there are now many opportunities to learn about entrepreneurship and business from the comfort of your own home.

Online Classes

BYU online classes have received high praise from students who have taken them. Coursera and EdX also offer online entrepreneurship and investing classes that you can take at your own pace. Some community colleges also offer online or hybrid courses in this field, so it's worth checking with your local college to see what they have to offer. If you're looking for something more comprehensive, consider Harvard Extension's online for-credit Harvard classes, although they come at a cost.

Bootcamps and Workshops

There are also bootcamps and workshops available that offer hands-on learning experiences. Teach Me Wall Street is a great example of one such program, and students who have participated in it have spoken highly of the experience.

Competitions

Competitions are a great way to get hands-on experience and learn from others. The Wharton Investment Competition is one such competition that you might consider participating in. It's a great opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals and to gain real-world experience in investment and entrepreneurship.

Summer programs

There are TONS of summer program options to dip your toes into learning more about the many facets of business or even get help starting a business of your own. There is great variability in grade/age eligibility, in-person on-campus or online, prior recommended knowledge or experience, duration, price, and selectivity of the programs. Be sure to do your research!
