What does mindfulness have to do with college applications? Whether it is learning to befriend your inner critic, increase your focus and concentration, jump back up from a perceived failure, or overcome test anxiety— these are learnable skills. However, most schools do not teach these skill sets. People can tell you to ‘relax’ or that ‘it’s the journey, not the destination that counts’ or a plethora of other platitudes that sound nice, but beyond reach. That is, until you know how.
(Note, mindfulness is not a replacement for psychotherapy or crisis management. If someone is in real distress, this is not the appropriate tool). But for many people— from a high achieving and highly self-critical young adult to a disengaged student- I invite you to try mindfulness.
